Llanbedr and Mochras

Llanbedr is a small, pleasant village on the river Artro. It has three pubs serving food, the Victoria Inn, the Ty-Mawr and Hafan Artro.  There is a church and small shops for daily necessities.

There is a supermarket and launderette at Mochras (Shell Island), which is reached by a tidal causeway and has an excellent bathing beach, marina and camp site.

Talwrn Bach is close to the Cambrian Coast Railway Line’s tiny station of Llanbedr. Trains run about every 2 hours to coastal towns and villages, and many of our guests enjoy exploring the area by train.

Beaches

Cardigan Bay has miles of fine, safe sandy beaches. Our favourites are MochrasLlandanwg (where the car park is close to the beach and there is a tiny church hidden in the sand dunes), and of course Harlech

Mountains, forests and walks

The Wales Coast Path runs right alongside the property, the 24-mile Ardudwy Way is close by, and there are many other pleasant walks from the doorstep. It is a very pleasant evening stroll along the banks of the Artro and the embankment to the estuary and Shell Island, often with magnificent sunsets.

The road from Llanbedr meanders far into the mountains, to Cwm Bychan with its lake and the "Roman Steps" and pretty Cwm Nantcol. From the road there are nature and farm trails and marked paths for woodland, riverside and mountain walks.

The Coed-y-Brenin forest is 40 minutes drive away, with marked trails, picnic sites, a visitor's centre, and mountain bikes for hire.

Nearby Harlech is a world heritage site, worth taking at least a day to explore. The castle perched on an outcrop dominates the area and is perhaps your first port of call, but take the time to wander around the old streets and enjoy quirky shops and a range of eating places.  Down below the old town the beach is glorious for buckets and spades or just a long walk.

We are ideally located for exploring the mountains of Snowdonia, with most of the region within an hour's drive. It is about 45 minutes drive to the foot of Snowdon itself.

Snowdonia is famous for its trains and castles: the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis, the Welsh Highland Railway and Ffestiniog steam railways starting from Porthmadoc and the Tal-y-Llyn railway from Tywyn; well known castles at Harlech, Criccieth, Caernarfon, Conwy, plus others for you to discover for yourselves.

Talwrn Bach is within the Snowdonia National Park, which publishes a variety of information for walkers and runs various events (organised walks etc) during the summer months.

For the Adventurous

Snowdonia is fast becoming noted for its activity and adventure holidays, with several amazing attractions opening in recent years. Zipworld offers fast and long zip wires over an old quarry site along with underground trampolining, treetop adventures, forest coaster, and an underground adventure trail. The Surf Snowdonia artificial wave park is the ideal place to learn to surf and with waves generated at the push of a button the waves are guaranteed.

More to do

There are slate caverns and a children’s farm at the nearby village of Llanfair. If you enjoy the slate caverns, try the more extensive Llechwedd Deep Mine and working slate mine at Blaenau Ffestiniog and a very different experience at the magical King Arthur's Labyrinth at Corris. Capel Salem is a tiny famous chapel near Llanbedr.

There is an excellent golf course, the Royal St David’s at Harlech, and several others within easy distance.   Horse-riding, water sports, a fun fair at Barmouth, the italian-style village of Portmeirion, the rabbit farm near Criccieth, the Glynllifon Country Park (with a steam engine, follies, a children's mountain and cafe), the former quarrying village of Nant Gwrtheyrn.

The landscape in the wider area was shaped by the slate industry and the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales is now a Unesco World Heritage site, with many trails and sites to visit including the fascinating national slate museum at Llanberis. Information packs are provided in our farmhouse and cottages.
